Samuel Morais of Laval, Que., landed eight jumps including a triple Axel on Saturday to gain five spots in the overall standings and finish sixth in men’s singles to conclude the third stop in the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit.
Yan Han of China, fifth after the short, soared to the gold with 170.48 points, Artem Grigoriev of Russia was second at 166.04 and his compatriot Zhan Bush third at 164.56.
Morais, 18, was 11th after the short program and delivered the fourth best long program of the day to make the biggest gain in the standings. He earned personal best marks for his overall score at 156.55 and the long program at 107.72.
The triple Axel was the first jump in his long program and set the tone.
“This is the first season I have the triple Axel in my program and it’s fantastic to land it this early in the season,” said Morais. “It’s been getting more and more consistent for me in training but I missed it in the short and that hurt my ranking. I have my steps to execute the jump and I just focused on that, then once it was landed moved on to the rest of my program.”
The news wasn’t as good for Kate Charbonneau of Winnipeg, near tears after placing 15th in women’s singles.
“That wasn’t the performance I wanted,” said Charbonneau, 17, a silver medallist on the circuit last season. “This is a new program that is a lot busier and with a lot more difficulties than last year. I’m disappointed I couldn’t duplicate what I was doing in practice.”
Adelina Sotnikova of Russia won the gold.
The next stop on the circuit is this Thursday to Saturday in Karuizawa, Japan.
